Rollback

A rollback is what occurs when Nexon returns a server to a previous date of gameplay. This erases all leveling, as well as all meso/item/NX obtained during that time period. They are generally only used in emergency cases, where the problem cannot be fixed with simply a Server Check. Rollbacks have long been apart of MapleStory's history but have come to light in great abundance in recent months (most of 2010). While throughout 2005-2009, rollbacks occurred very rarely, and were minor. Recent rollbacks have been devastating the Maple community as a whole, and have had great effects.

July 2010 rollbacks

Please note that many server checks have occurred in this month, and only the ones of greatest priority are listed.

  • The most infamous rollback to due, occurred on July 13th, 2010, due to an NPC item exchange glitch, that resulted in "billions upon billions" of hacked/glitched Mesos injected in the Maple economy. This resulted in a 48 hour rollback among all of Global MapleStory's eleven servers (July 13th - back to -> July 11th). The downtime from the rollback lasted practically an entire day. Many maplers complained that the exploit was known for weeks in advance of Nexon's knowledge. Nexon offered numerous forms of compensation [1], ranging from 5,000 Maple Points to nearly 48 hours of 2x EXP/Drop events. And much to the dismay of millions, the much hyped Dual Blade release was delayed by 7 days. Nexon also offered extension to the popular Explorer Rings Quest chain, which many people lost due to the rollback.
  • The very same meso glitch was exploited within the following weeks, and led to an emergency server check/rollback on July 23rd. This was the very same day of the Dual Blade release. Although some blamed the problems on sever strain caused by the mass influx of users, it became apparent that the meso exploit was to blame. Nexon temporarily fixed the problem. A rollback occurred that involved roughly 24 hours of reset time.
  • On July 28th, Windia faced a 24 hour rollback that caused widespread panic. For more, see Windia#Rollbacks.
  • Galicia and Scania have also been target to rollbacks since at least May 2010. Some blame both rollbacks on the server's unstable populations. Scania is massively overpopulated, and Galicia is still a new server experiencing a massive population boom daily. Both servers continued to experience spontaneous, unannounced, and uncompensated rollbacks well into July.

August 2010 rollbacks

  • The dramatic rollbacks continued into August for the servers of Scania, Broa, Windia and Galicia, among others. Each server has experienced at least one rollback, only about a few hours.
  • However, Scania has experienced at least 5 rollbacks (as of 08/06) [2], and at least 7 server crashes within the first week of August. Some have complained [3] about the "special treatment" Windia received a week earlier for their "minor rollback", while Scania continues to experience not only constant server overload, near hourly crashes, but unscheduled server checks, and unknown rollbacks. A server crash turned rollback occured on Khaini on August 1st, as well as on Demethos. [4]
  • Bellocan also experienced a minor rollback on August 4th. Rollbacks occurred silently on August 5th, moments after the Server Check on Galicia. An unscheduled server crash on August 5th, led to a rollback [5] early on August 6th for the server of Broa [6]. On August 6th, Khaini experienced a server crash which led to a short rollback (1 hour). Scania also experienced its 5th major rollback on August 6th, which led to a server crashing lasting at least 4 hours, and helped contribute to a 3 hour Global server check. [7] There have been complaints about the rollbacks and server crashes on DC hacking[8], the release of the Dual Blade patch (a couple weeks earlier), and very many complaints about whether a specific quest (involving temporary scrolls) is to blame [9] [10].
  • Several rollbacks were apart of the "August Apocalypse", that led to a temporarily closing and removal of Scania from GMS. Late in the evening on August 14th, a brief rollback occurred on Scania. [11] On August 16th, Scania had a minor rollback on Channel 3, roughly 15 minutes. [12] Very early on August 20th, Scania crashed momentarily. [13] After the server returned, it become apparent that there was a rollback effecting roughly one hour.[14] Due to unknown consequences, a 2.5 hour server check effected all servers.[15] Some speculated that it might have had to do with Scania and "The Visitors" patch.[16] Later on that same day, Scania experienced random channel downtime. A few minutes later the channels were restored after a minor rollback.[17] However, the server later crashed again.[18] Also on the evening of August 20th, Broa and Windia experienced sporadic server downtime, ending in rollbacks.[19]

[20]

  • Some Maplers had speculated that the crashings may have been related to "The Visitors - Stage II" event [21], while have mentioned that hackers have claimed responsibility. [22] In an attempt to resolve the issues, Nexon issued an emergency server check. And after 3 hours, resolved the issues, citing the event as the cause. Compensation is to be offered, but is currently unknown. [23]

November 2010 rollbacks

  • On November 9, Maplestory announced that a rollback will take place on the 10th, and all characters will be set back to November 8. The reason was that a meso bug was generating large quantities of mesos and introducing them to the economy. [24]
  • On November 11, Maplestory reopened at 2:30 PM Pacific time after a long maintenance that involved fixing meso counterfeits. However, mesos were still being introduced to the Maple economy through the Free Market, so the servers were closed again a little over three hours later. Since increased amounts of mesos raise the cost of a player's in-game items, The Maple Team decided to rollback to November 8, but 12 hours prior to the previous rollback. Compensation was presented in the form of 5,000 Maple Points to players who logged in on the 8th, as well as players who logged in on the 10th. Various compensation events will also be posted within the next day. [25]
