User:Tetrix/Extracting Mini-Map Images Tutorial

Whenever a new map is released, you will be probably waiting for other MapleStory website like HiddenStreet for updates on the maps, so that you can save and upload here. But those websites require some time for them to upload the mini-map images (as they are edited only by staff members), but this wiki can be edited by all registered people. Therefore, I create this guide to teach you how to extract mini-map images from the game (if you don't want to extract the files directly from the MapleStory folder).

Requirements

You need:

  • MapleStory game
  • Paint
  • Print Screen button on your keyboard

Step 1

  • Go to a map with a mini-map you want to extract.
  • Ensure that there is nobody in this map, as 'red dot(s)' (or other colour dots) will appear at the mini-map.
  • Make sure you stand at a portal such that the yellow dot (which is you) is on the warp symbol on the mini-map.

Step 2

  • Open up buddy list (or other list that has a totally white background).
  • Move the min-map box to the buddy list, so that the background of the mini-map is totally the same colour. This is because the background of the mini-map is transparent.
  • Done that, press the button 'Print Screen' on your keyboard.

Step 3

  • Press ALT-TAB to go out of the game and open up Paint.
  • Press CTRL + V (or under Edit -> Paste) to paste the screen you captured.
  • Zoom in by 200% or 400% for better viewing.
  • Using the drag tool, drag the whole rectangular shape of the mini-map.
  • Copy it or press CTRL + C.

Step 4

  • Open up another Paint.
  • Paste the picture you copied using CTRL + V.
  • Ensure that the border of the picture is moved so that there are all grey areas around the mini-map.
  • Zoom in.

Step 5

  • Add the colours onto the portal using Pencil or Brush tool with different colours.
  • Ensure that the colour is correct - blue not dark blue or light blue. Blue and red are commonly used.
  • After you done that, save the name as the name of the map. (Labortory 1st Floor Corridor in this case). Make sure you save as a '.png' file!

There you have it. Now go upload to the database and create an article on it! Oh yes, if there is a hidden portal not found on the mini-map, put a star there. This tutorial only applies with small mini-maps. Big mini-maps are complicated to extract as the mini-map move when players are walking towards a direction. Enjoy and have fun!
