The Path of the Magician

From MapleWiki

Why should I choose the Magician?

I am a magician, and am writing this guide with the hope that you'll become one, too. Magicians will be laughed at when they first start because of their low HP and weakness. But when mages get to level 25, they'll hit harder than any class could ever imagine. NOW WHO'S LAUGHING?!?!

Requirements

It's not hard to make the job advancement to magician. You just need 20 INT and must be level 8 (unlike other classes, that must be level 10). Once you have that, go to Grendel the Really Old in Ellinia. The trip to Ellinia is dangerous at your level because of the slime, green mushroom, and the orange mushroom. Also, in the forest, DON'T GO INTO THE TREE HOLES as they lead to dangerous dungeons. They will become good training places later on, but...

Pros

  • VERY high MP
  • Stable damage
  • Some spells can go through walls
  • With MP Eater later in the second job, you need to use very few MP potions
  • Can use elemental attacks early
  • If you choose to be a Cleric, in your fourth job, you can bring party members back to life

Cons

  • Horrible HP
  • Expensive until you have MP Eater in your second job
  • Armor gives low defence
  • Some spells are a bit slow to cast

Stats

These are not real calculations. I made them up according to what I think.

HP: ////////(40/100)

MP: ////////////////////(100/100) Strong Point

Magic Atk: ////////////////////(100/100) Strong Point

Defence: ////////////(60/100)

Cost: ////////(40/100) The lower the better!

Melee Atk: ///(15/100) Weak Point

Single Target: //////////////////(90/100) Strong Point

Multiple Targets: /////////////(65/100)

Skills

You have 6 skills to use. This window can be accessed by pressing the "K" key on your keyboard (unless you change it, of course). When you level up, you get 5 skill points to put into each skill. Choose which skills you want, but choose wisely. You can't take it back after its been done.

Improving MP Recovery: Improves the amount of MP you recover in 10 seconds. You can recover MP even when you're moving, unlike HP when you have to stand still. A good skill to have, and it is AUTOMATIC.

Improving Max MP Increase: You gain more maximum MP upon leveling up. If you put more into this skill, you'll have tons of Max MP when you make the job advancement to your second job. However, you need 5 skill points in Improving MP Recovery before you can start putting points into this one.

Magic Armor: This is not a very good skill to put points into. It "blows" magic into your armor, increasing your defence temporarily. When you fight huge monsters, a little bit of defence isn't gonna help. You must put 3 points into Magic Guard first.

Magic Guard: A much better skill than Magic Armor in my opinion. Say you have 200HP and 400MP. You're fighting a big monster that can hit 50's. That's a 4-hit KO for you! But, Magic Guard temporarily substitutes your MP for HP, so you'll have 400 extra HP!

Energy Bolt: A projectile attack that CANNOT go through terrain. I would recommend Magic Claw over it, though.

Magic Claw: A non-projectile attack that CAN go through terrain. I would recommend this attack over Energy Bolt. You must have 1 point put into Energy Bolt, first.

Energy Bolt or Magic Claw?

This is a common question among us mages. I prefer Magic Claw because it can go through terrain and has a basic attack of 80 (really 40, but it attacks twice). Energy Bolt has a basic attack of 55, but cannot go through walls and stuff. That's why I prefer Magic Claw. But hey, some people just like Energy Bolt.

Training

Training is the hard but necessary part of MapleStory. It takes a long time to level up when you're over level 30, but you need it to grow stronger.

Level 8-13

You're weak right now, so I think that you should continue fighting with Triple Shells.

Train on:

  • Snails
  • Blue Snails
  • Shroom
  • Slime
  • Stump
  • And for a challenge, Orange Mushroom

Level 13-19

Growing stronger! You also have new armor and weapon choices available!

Train on all of the above and:

  • Octopi in Kerning City
  • If you're feeling lucky, Horny and Green Mushroom
  • Dark Stump
  • Dark Axe Stump
  • Pig
  • Ribbon Pig

Level 19-24

You should now be able to 1 hit KO many things now with Magic Claw. At level 21, the Kerning City Party Quest is available.

Train on all of the above and:

  • Jr. Sentinels in Orbis
  • Wild Boar
  • Axe Stump
  • Ghost Stump
  • Try Blue Mushroom, but have potions ready
  • Meerkat and Desert Rabbit in Ariant

Level 24-28

Now you should be thinking what you want to be next for your job advancement.

You should now be able to figure out what you can train on by now. Choose something that you can kill in 1-3 hits so you don't waste MP. Make sure it gives good EXP.

Level 28-30

Are you excited? A few more levels to your job advancement!

Just do the same thing you did for the last four levels and you'll level up in no time!

Job Advancements

Now, you're ready for your next job advancement! Choose from three different types of Wizards!

Clerics: The weakest Wizards. The hardest to train. They use holy attacks. However, with the party skills that you have(Heal and Bless), people BEG to be in your party! The power to bring people back to life in your fourth job is what really gets to everyone.

Fire/Poison Wizards: The strongest types of Wizards. Fire is really strong, but Poison is really weak, so it all balances out. Weaken enemies with Poison Breath. Then, kill them with Fire Arrow!

Ice/Lightning Wizards: The medium power Wizards. I think that these are the best, since I am one. No need for the skill Slow, as you can freeze them with Cold Beam! Say there's a group of six slime surrounding you. You only have 1HP. With the skill Thunderbolt, you can take them all out in one shot because Thunderbolt hits six enemies at once.

How to do it

It's not that hard. But bring both HP and MP potions just in case. Talk to Grendel the Really Old in Ellenia. He'll give you a letter. Then, go to The Forest North of Ellenia. Climb to the very top. Soon, you'll see an NPC named Magician Job Instructor. Talk to him and he'll send you to a place with stronger enemies. There are Curse Eyes and Horny Mushroom, but they are strengthened. They drop Dark Marbles with a 33.3% chance. Talk to the Magician Job Instructor again when you have 30 of them. He'll reward you with Proof of a Hero. Talk to Grendel the Really Old again, choose your job, and Congratulations! You're a Wizard!

Conclusion

Now you wonder: Now what? You can do anything, now. Train for your third job as a mage! Explore new places! You are now the mosst powerful class in Maplestory!
