The Beginning

The world that we know as Maplestory was not always full of adventurers and monsters. After all, they never existed in the beginning. In the beginning, there were only the gods, the ones called Wizet. They are the ones that create the worlds before we walked on them, and they continue to do that today.

Wizet began to shape and mold the island of Maple and the island of Victoria for the people they would next create. The molded great mountains, high plains, giant fields, immense oceans, magnificent forests, and all other minor details to a great extent. After the two islands were created with utmost perfection, they populated it with plants. After the plants came, next came the humans.

They descended to the world like maple leaves fell from a maple tree. Each one landed so beautifully and had a grace and beauty throughout their life. Some worked their whole lives, some fought their whole lives, and some slacked off their whole lives. Our story begins with those that fought.

The Start of the Four

After years had past since the gods created the two islands, four people rose above the others. They were fighters, they were all trained in fighting styles that they had created. There was Dances with Balrogs, an Indian trained in his style that he called 'The Way of the Warrior', there was Grendel the Really Old, trained in his art of 'Magic', there was Athena Pierce who was trained in the 'Bowman Ways', and last there was the Dark Lord, trained in the art of 'Thievery'. These four grew in power, and once became a threat to each other.

One day, they met in the center of the world, where they would fight to find out who would be the strongest. This place they went to would, one day, be called Sleepywood, a town where the strongest on Victoria Island would gather. They arrived a day after the bout was declared, and they began to fight.

The fight lasted on for days. Everyone had their ups and downs in this fight, but they knew that only one of them could prevail. On the fifth day, the fight ended, and the champion stood, or should I say 'champions'. No one had won, but they knew that they were equally matched. They knew that they could never defeat each other, so they became friends and moved to different towns.

Each person moved to a place where their skills would be used. Dances with Balrog moved to the land of Perion, where only the strong would prevail. Grendel moved to the magical forest of Ellinia, where magical powers were at their greatest. Athena moved the quiet plain of Henesys, where the flat land would improve her efficiency with bows. And lastly, the Dark Lord moved to the area of Kerning, where soon after a town was built, named Kerning City, which had the environment where someone who relies on darkness and the shadows would prosper.

Life was good for them; it was normal and never too hard. They went on with living their lives and growing stronger. However, one day one of them got bored. That one was Dances with Balrog, and he is the start of all monsters in this world. It is a well kept secret, but it must be told here.

The Start of the Monsters

He went to visit Grendel one day in Ellinia. He asked Grendel if he could use his magic to create life. Grendel said that he could, but he asked why. Dances replied with 'Aren't you bored now and then? Lets create things worthy of our power!’ Grendel was at first appalled at what he just heard. If they created creatures with their power, everyone would be in trouble. He told Dances to consult the other two before they would start anything.

Dances with Balrog did just that, he traveled through the lands, going to Henesys and Kerning, asking Athena and the Dark Lord about his proposition. Although they both found it dangerous, they were incredibly bored. They knew they should be able to handle them, so they said yes. With that, Dances went back to Grendel.

Grendel agreed to make creature for them to toy with. However, he had nothing to blow life into. He said he needed items to create them, so Dances once again went out into the world to get things. As he traveled, he told Athena and the Dark Lord to get items too, and they did. A month after this was asked had passed, and the three of them arrived back at Grendel.

Grendel took these items, which consisted of Snail Shells, Orange Mushroom Caps, Sticks, Firewood, Tablecloths, Octopus Legs, Squishy Liquids, Green Mushroom Caps, and more, and began to blow life into them. It took a day, but he did it. That was the birth of the first monsters.

The Monsters move onto the Land

These monsters then burst out of Grendel's home and scattered, to live in other areas and live their own lives. Over time, the four of them gathered more and more items from all over the world. More and more monsters appeared, but soon they grew out of control.

The monsters began to scare the townspeople. They lived on the outskirts of town. They weren't threats as they were, but they could be if they figured it out how powerful they were. No one knew where they came from except for one day.

One of the fairies in Elinia found a doll in Grendel's room, one of the ones dropped by one of the monsters when they were killed. Although they couldn't pin him to all of the monsters, they believed he was responsible for one kind of them.

Despite how the townsfolk felt, they kept making monsters. Eventually, they could not fight anymore, so they could only watch as the monsters' numbers increased. The four people, Dances, Grendel, Athena and the Dark Lord, became scared, and asked for help from someone. That is where the brave adventurers come in.

  • Discontinuity: How could Dances with Balrog have that name if balrogs hadn't even been created yet? ^_^*

The Adventurers cometh!

One day, there were reports that people were just appearing on Maple Island. Just like people once descended onto the world like maple leaves, so did they. They had no idea where they came from, but they knew how to fight. This came as a surprise to the four people, so they welcomed these strangers into their towns. The four people began to teach these strangers about their ways of fighting, and soon became known as the Four Wise People of Victoria.

People began to fight in the ways that the four used to, and they spread their ways around the world. These people fought the monsters, and they found that fun. Eventually, the world was running out of monsters. Seeing how the new people liked fighting these, a plan was hatched.

Whenever something was sold back to the towns, such as monster droppings, it would go to the Wise men of the town and then back to Grendel, where he would create more monsters secretly, and set them free for the adventurers to kill.

Time goes on

The worlds grew, and this cycle kept going. No one complained; everyone was happy. The gods called Wizet kept sculpting new worlds, in which were visited by the Four Wise People first so they could collect items and create monsters. Life went on, adventurers came and went, new worlds came and new monsters followed.

Because of the way these adventurers first descended on the world and how they continue to, this era of the world and their story has been called Maplestory, a tribute to them and their achievements.
