Introduction

Hello, and welcome to my guide to MapleStory's terminology! Now, there will be two different groups of users, no prejudice involved. There will be the experienced players who understand the common terminology of RPG games and then there is the part for the fresh players that are completely new to the Role Playing Game system. For all you experienced players, you can skip anything that's heading ends in "(Newb)" (which is just a little endearment term I use for the new players :DD). Well, without further ado, let's get started!

Basic RPG Terminology (Newb)

As with any RPG game in which you take the role as a character in a universe that is created by the game, there exists languages that derive from pidgin invented by players attempting to communicate between two different languages and the common AIM-like messages that are sometimes used.

So, what better place to start than defining the word RPG?

RPG - Role Playing Game, a game in which players take the role of a character that is able to interact with NPCs and other players.

NPC - Non-Player Characters, characters which the player can interact with, but are not players themselves.

Certain RPG games that have leveling (the majority) will have the term LVL(lvl), which means "level".

Those are the most basic terms in any RPG. From this point on, any more vocabulary will be completely game-related and won't be seen in other games (with a few exceptions, of course).

Derogatory RPG Language (Newb)

Yes, I know all of you people there who hate HATERS will tell me not to make this portion of the guide, but I feel that compiling a list of derogatory language is necessary. For our own protection and those of new players, this is pretty useful.

Noob (also spelled "n00b", "nub", "nuub", and many other variations) - a contraction of the word "new" or "newbie", it is used either for players with terrible stats, new players who don't understand the game, or players that just piss off other players (excuse the bad language).

Hater - actually a commonly used word in our own lives, meaning someone who speaks or acts in a derogatory way against certain people or things. Hacker(also spelled "hax0r", "haxor", and other variations) - A person that either uses illegal software or changes game files to get an unfair advantage over other players.

Somewhat Derogatory Language

Some words might not be taken so negatively, so I have included them here.

1337(though the numbers spell "leet", the official way of writing this word is "1337") - contraction (and symbolization) of the word "elite", used by some to promote themselves as powerful, but usually just gets themselves called a n00b.

Pro - short for "professional", this word is also used for self-promoting, but has the same negative effect as "1337".

Chatting/Gaming Terminology (NewbNewb)

This category is for those people that are COMPLETELY new to the world of RPGs and chatting (hence the double Newb).

PLZ or pl0x or other - Please

TY or Thx - Thank You/Thanks

Grats or Gratz - Commonly used after a player has leveled, "congratulations"

JK - Just Kidding

LOL - Laugh Out Loud

ROFL - Rolling On Floor Laughing

LMAO - Laughing My A** Off

ROLFMAO - Rolling On Floor Laughing My A** Off

ROFLCOPTER - Not an acronym, a rarely used version of ROFL that is used by fans of Arby 'n' the Chief

BRB - Be Right Back

GTG or G2G - Got To Go

AFK - Away From Keyboard (i.e. not responding)

DC - Disconnected (happens to most people with bad lag)

LAG - Slow internet response

BTW - By The Way

IKR? - I Know Right?

ATM - Automated Teller Machine (lol jk, it means At The Moment)

MapleStory

Now we begin the real in-depth MapleStory stuff. If you still have played this for a while, you can still skip ahead, but if you just graduated from "Newb" status, CONGRATULATIONS!!!

General

These are some general terms that all Maplers use

NX - refers to Nexon Cash, the paid part of the game.

Smega - Short for Super Megaphone, it is an item bought in the cash shop for broadcasting a message over the entire channel.

Jobs

Warrior - Has the Highest HP in all of MapleStory, but the lowest MP and generally the highest damage. They can "tank" which will be explained in a bit.

Magician - Exactly the opposite of the Warrior. has abysmal Weapon Defense and has the lowest amount of HP in the whole game, but has the highest amount of MP and practically owns the 15 ~ 30 level range. Also, Clerics are considered the game's richest class.

Bowman - Has the farthest range of any other class in MapleStory, and excels in ranged attacks. In melee combat, however, it may have some difficulty.

Thief - Has approximately the same range as a bowman, faster shooting, and better melee, which explains it popularity.

Pirate - New class that uses either melee or guns.

Okay, enough of the explanations. Now for the lingo.

Tanking - Used by Warriors, Dawn Warriors, and some Arans, this involves using the Warrior's brute strength, high Weapon Defense, and Super-High HP to take on monsters at a far higher level than the player him/herself. Also, the tank absorbs the damage (usually from bosses) for the other party members to survive.

Ranging - Attacking from a distance; achievable by Bowmen, Rouges/Assassins, and Mages (meaning the 3rd Job Advancement).

Healing - Skill used by Clerics and other Holy Magicians

Mage - Short for Magician, though occasionally confused with Mage

Sin - No, not an act against the Ten Commandments of Moses, it is short for Assassin.

Dit - Short for Bandit

DEXless (or LUKless for mages) - Used by most Assassins, Bandits (though not as much), and (very rarely) some Warriors. The reason for completely ignoring a part of their essential stats is because by doing so they can maximize the potential of their Damage stat (LUK for Thieves, STR for Warriors, INT for Magicians)

Godly - My favorite. This means that an Item or Character has unbelievably good stats

Free Market Terminology

For anyone who hasn't played Maple before, the Free Market (or FM) is one of the best places to buy/sell items, and is highly convenient BUT BEWARE OF SCAMMERS!!!!! One more plus, YOU CAN BARGAIN! This is impossible in NPC operated stores and can lower the amount you need to pay considerably!

Terminology: You will find people saying these things in the Free Market

B>XXXXXX - B> stands for "Buying"

S>XXXXXX - S> stands for "Selling"

T>XXXXXX (Very Rare) - T> stands for "Trading" where the player will trade an item for one of equal or greater value (Usually denotes what he is trading for what).

XXXXXX@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@ - The chain of "@"s is to help boost the height of the speech bubble for other players to see.

offer - Means that the seller has no fixed price, and will decide after you offer a price to them.

FMX (X standing for a number) - Go to the rooms in the background which are accordingly numbered.

Party Quest Terminology

There are many different Party Quests, each with their own terminology, but there are some that apply to all.

PQ - Party Quest

J>PQ or JPQ - Joining Party Quest

R>PQ or RPQ - Recruiting for Party Quest

CC - Change Channel

Rush - Applies only to a few where you try to get through the entire quest as fast as you can. OR It means in a PQ such as KPQ to immediately go in after finishing.

Track - To have a person's name who is in a highly contested PQ and repeatedly using "/find XXXXXX"

Scout or Spy - To send a person out before the PQ ends to look for other parties and determine the difficulty of rushing.

Henesys Party Quest

Level Requirement: 10+

You save a bunny from evil bats and things. Isn't that awesome?!?!?!?!

EXP achieved for a good PQ:1600

Terms:

HPQ - Henesys Party Quest

Brown, Pink, Purple, Blue, Green, Yellow - refers tot he colors of the primrose seed that are necessary for the PQ to be completed.

Basically not much Terminology necessary.

Kerning Party Quest

Level Requirement:21~30

You go around doing odd jobs and gain EXP for each! Also possible to get Squishy Shoes, +1 every Stat and Speed+2 or +3!!!

EXP:Varies

Here is the first encounter of Rush and Scouting for a player.

The platforms/ropes will also be denoted by number. The best defense against being kicked from the party is just to follow what your leader says.

Ariant Party Quest

Level Requirement:21~30

This resembles Pokemon in a way...

There honestly is no singular terminology for this PQ.

Monster Carnival

Level Requirement:30~50

This is by far the best PQ for anyone lvls 30~50. It gives awesome experience and the Maple Coin system gives you FREE EQUIPS!!!

Note: In certain worlds such as Galicia, the rooms will be heavily contested over, and a good room may not always be available.

EXP:

A-Rank:30,000 or 10,000 if lose

B-Rank:25,500 or 8,500 if lose

C-Rank:21,000 or 7,000 if lose

D-Rank:15,500 or 1,000 if lose

E-Rank:0 (extremely rare)

TW - Means "Trade Win", where one team will win, then let the other win, and so on, to maximize EXP gained

FFF - Fight For First, used before a TW session especially when the two teams are evenly matched. Sometimes colloquially used to mean no TW.

Coin Farm - Dropping large amounts of Maple Coins without picking them up apparently.

Coin Trading - Taking Turns picking up coins. Maple Coins themselves are untradeable.

Ludibrium Party Quest

Level Requirement: 35~50

This PQ is now underpopulated since Monster Carnival was released. The jargon similar to that of KPQ.

Mu Lung Dojo

Level Requirement: 25~200

This PQ is a hybrid, because you can solo it or do it with friends. The best part of this PQ is that you can do it once you hit 25; your level will never "expire" and you can PQ indefinitely here.

Solo - to do it by yourself

Poison Forest(EPQ)

Level Requirement: 45~55

This PQ is more challenging as it is a multi-stage one, and it takes some previous planning and group organization.
