Maple Island
Maple Island is the place you start, when you've created a character. This place has weak monsters so you can train at low levels. You can find Green, Blue and Red snails around in this island there are also shrooms and mushrooms. Maple Island is one of three continents in Maplestory, the others being Victoria Island and Ossyria.
A Walkthrough!!! (Finally) Your First Quest - Sera's Mirror!

This is where you start off when you create a character.
Minimap legend:
Green --> NPC, Yellow --> Yourself, Red --> Other people, Orange --> Party, Blue --> Portal.
Straightforward enough?
Heena, above you, will have a lightbulb above her.
Click on her and she will complain about the sun, etc. Then, she will ask you to get a mirror from Sera, who is on the right. This is Sera's mirror 
. (Oh yeah, there is a rumor that the mirror will deflect defames and fames, but you'd be better off completing the quest.)
Go over to Sera (do not enter the portal), get the mirror by clicking on her, and then get back.
Heena will talk about how her complexion isn't ruined, and says that as a reward, you'll get...

Now, enter the portal.
Roger, the practical joker
Roger in this map doesn't have a lightbulb, but all the same, its interesting...
He'll give you an item called Roger's Apple. He'll then take away half your HP (meanie!), and he expects you to eat the apple. Some people keep it as it fits into one slot by itself and doesn't mix, but that's plain wasting. Once you eat the apple, click on him and he'll give you 3 Red Potions. (he may give you exp...)
Once you're done, leave the map.
Nina and Sen
You are currently here, in Mushroom Town. After walking a bit, you'll see Nina 
with a lightbulb.
By now, you should have realised:
Light bulb = New quest
Open (torn?) book = Quest in progress
Closed book with a star (I think) on it = Complete quests.
To check on them, go to the quest menu.
Now, enter the portal in front of the mushroom house. Sen 
is inside.
He'll tell you that he wants mushroom soup. Go out, talk to Nina and you'll have...

Todd's How to Hunt (finally, monster(s) to kill)
Enter the map called "East Entrance to Mushroom Town".
On the ground there is a NPC (Non-Playing-Character) called Todd. Double click on him and he will give you a quest. He wants you to kill a Tutorial Jr. Sentinel that are scattered all over the map and collect the shell.
This is a very easy quest, and once you kill a Tutorial Jr. Sentinel and get its shell you will have to go to Peter, another NPC who is at the top of the map. Talk to him and get your reward (some EXP) and exit by the portal.
If you want to gain more EXP, kill the Tutorial Jr. Sentinels that are in your way while you make your way to Peter.
Note: Once you take the portal, you can never go back again
