Description

In MapleStory and various other MMORPG games, a tank is a character who attempts to direct a monster's attention and attacks in him/herself. To accomplish this, the character usually stands in front of the target(s). The character must draw Aggro from the monster to himself/herself, causing the monster to always target the tanker.

Why Tank?

  • Tanking is a widely used tactic in parties. A party can send one member to tank while the others attack from a distance. This will help prevent weaker party members from taking damage (especially if the monster deals high damage).
  • Melee classes, such as most warriors and bandits, have to get up close with the monster to deal damage. These characteristics make such characters ideal tankers.
  • Power Guard. Power Guard is a skill whereby some touch damage that you recieve from a monster is reflected back to the monster. Tanking on a monster whilst having Power Guard activated means that you can damage the monster.

Note: Tanks should always attack the monster first to build aggro to the tank.

Classes that are good for tanking

In order of effectiveness:

  1. HP Warrior: The best class for tanking. Has an immense amount of HP and thus can withstand high damage. If it is a Fighter or Page, Power Guard can be used to inflict loads of damage back on the monster.
  2. Warrior: Highest HP of all classes, due to Improving Max HP Increase.
  3. Cleric: Can Heal, and has Magic Guard to negate the fact that Magicians have low HP. A Cleric that adds many AP into HP will be at a greater advantage, as he/she can withstand more hits from monsters.
