Setting Up MapleStory
Assuming that you haven't yet registered for, downloaded and installed MapleStory, please read this section of the guide thoroughly; and, if you have, please skip to the next section. Good luck!
MapleStory Servers
In MapleStory, there are currently eight different servers for you to choose from. Though, most, if not all, have applied IP blocks to users from other countries (for example, just recently, MapleStory Global IP blocked European users, so, now, they must use MapleEurope). The servers are as follows:
- MapleStory Korea (KMS)
- MapleStory Japan (JMS)
- MapleStory China (CMS)
- MapleStory Taiwan
- MapleStory Thailand
- MapleStory Global (OMS/GMS)
- MapleStory SEA (MSEA)
- MapleStory Europe
Simply visit the MapleStory website and choose your appropriate server. (Seeing as this guide is written in English, I'm going to assume you're using either MapleStory Global, MapleStory S.E.A. or MapleStory Europe). Simple!
Account Registration
In order to play MapleStory, you must first have an active account to play on. This step shouldn't be too hard. (I will use MapleStory Global as a reference, though all servers have the same sort of registration system.) Just do the following to easily get through this. (It's kinda easy to figure out, but, whatever.)
- Click the 'Sign Up' button to your left.
- Enter your birthday (NOTE: You must be aged thirteen or over to play MapleStory)
- Click 'Proceed to Sign-Up!'
- Read the Nexon Privacy Policy, Nexon Terms of Use and Nexon End User License Agreement.
- Click each of the three 'boxes' and click 'OK'.
- Enter your wanted Nexon Passport ID, and press 'Check' once you're done.
- Enter your e-mail address.
- Re-enter your e-mail address, for confirmation purposes.
- Enter your wanted password.
- Re-enter your wanted password, for security (and confirmation) purposes.
- Enter your answer to 'What is the name of your best friend?'.
- Choose your second Security Question, and fill in your answer.
- Click 'Next>'.
- Enter your First, Middle and Last names.
- Select your gender.
- Re-enter your birthday.
- Select your country.
- Choose your State (/Province).
- Enter your Postal Code.
- Choose your Ethinicity.
- Click your appropriate 'boxes', preferably just 'I am the person named above and the above information is correct'.
- (FINALLY;) Click 'Finish'!
You will then receive a confirmation e-mail. Copy the code, re-visit the website, login, and enter your validation code. Voila! You are now a registered Nexon citizen.
Downloading & Installing
To download, simply visit the 'Downloads' page, and (if you're at the Nexon website, click the download button next to MapleStory) choose your appropriate file type, though I suggest .exe. Your download should take, on average, about 60 minutes (one hour), and, once it's done, launch MSSetup.exe. The installation shouldn't take long, and there's no point in me directing you as what to do. Once it's finished, you should see a MapleStory desktop shortcut on, yes, your desktop. Wuhoo! Simply launch MapleStory to begin your ACTUAL adventure.
Maple Details
Now that you have the MapleStory client up and ready, why not start? Simply enter your Nexon Passport ID and Nexon Passport Password, and press Login. Now, you will be prompted to enter a customized PIN. (Four-digit, numbers only.) Try to make it very hard to figure out, but if it's too hard to remember, write it down somewhere safe. Once finished, you will be asked to re-enter the PIN, and then it will be set. Though tedious, just press 'Login' again, and enter your PIN. (Once.) Then, you will have to read an agreement, (agreeing, I presume) and select your gender. Your gender in MapleStory will define little, if any, NPC/gaming actions, but people will think that you are of the gender you have chosen. So, choose wisely. Now, select one of the numerous...
MapleStory Worlds
In each MapleStory server, there are numerous worlds, with about 19/20 channels packed inside for you to devour. Assuming you have MapleStory Global, here is a list of all of its worlds:
Different worlds does not mean different content, but newer worlds will have less players than the older ones (obviously). I suggest choosing a semi-new world, like, Khaini. Not too populated, but still a decent amount of people to mix with.
MapleStory Channels
As (briefly) explained above, each world can hold up to 20 channels. Channels, too, do not necessarily determine what content is involved in the game (unless an event is being held at a certain channel, etc). Each channel can hold a fixed amount of 'Maplers' (characters/accounts), and, more popular worlds will have more populated channels. Usually, Channel 1 is overpopulated, thus, not a very good choice for training, etc. You may also want to train with your friends, and doing so, play on the same channel as them. You can change your channel (cc) at any time (as long as you are not 'resting', i.e. after a monster attack, you must wait a few seconds before you can change your channel).
Let's Get Mapling
Now that you've picked a world, and channel, to play on, you can begin your adventure! The next paragraph will help you along the way.
Creating Your Character(s)
Simply click the 'Create Character' button. You will be able to choose from various hairstyles, skin colors, clothes, weapons, etc. Now, you will also have to pick your character statistics (stats), such as STR (Strength), DEX (Dexterity), INT (Intelligence) and LUK (Luck).
Create-a-Warrior
"They usually use swords, axes, blunt weapons, spears, and pole arms. Some, like Dark Knights, also uses spells in their attacks."
"The job order for the warriors reveals a 3-way route. In order to advance as one of those, you'll need to meet various requirements. You should take time deciding what kind of a warrior you want to become down the road before committing yourself to a single route."
As a Warrior, you will rely on close-up combat attacks and/or skills. Though your damage, defense and Hit Points are high, you will, at first, be easily 'KSed' ('Kill Stolen') by ranged players, such as, well, all other classes! But don't let this get you down. Warriors, as just explained, deal exceptional damage, bear great defense, and can endure the worst of it!
In order to advance from a Beginner to a Warrior, you will need to reach Level 10 and you must have 35 STR. I highly suggest using your patience to roll the following on your stat dice-roll:
- --- STR
- --- DEX
- 4/5 INT
- 4/5 LUK
You would want to roll 4 or 5 on INT and LUK as they are unneeded stats for Warriors. But keep in mind that you should NEVER settle for, perhaps, 5 INT - 5 LUK, 5 INT, 6 LUK, etc. Two 4s or a 4 and a 5 should do you good. This part is crucial as it will affect your abilities later on.
Create-a-Magician
"Studying ancient studies is their virtue, so high intelligence is a top priority. Since they spend all their time researching, they may not have much of strength or stamina, and they use staffs and wands as their main weapons. For armor, they prefer light ones like robes with minimal defense. They can't put on heavy armor."
"The job order for the magicians reveal a 3-way job route. In order to advance as one of these jobs, various requirements need to be fulfilled. You should take time deciding what kind of a magician you want to become down the road before committing to a route."
Being a Magician, you will harness your intelligence to perform effective magic skills. Magicians are a ranged class, and thus making it easier to attack monsters with a bit of a distance. Though, if you're looking for distance, try a Bowman or a Claw Thief. The Magicians' Magic Claw skill is also exceptionally useful, as it attacks two times.
If you wish to advance from a Beginner to a Magician, you will need to reach level 8 and have at least 20 INT. The following approx. stat dice roll should be perfect:
- 4/5 STR
- 4/5 DEX
- --- INT
- --- LUK
You would want to roll 4 or 5 on STR and DEX as they are unneeded stats for Magicians (Magicians do not use physical abilities). But keep in mind that you should NEVER settle for, perhaps, 5 STR - 5 DEX, 5 STR, 6 DEX, etc. Two 4s or a 4 and a 5 should do you good. This part is crucial as it will affect your abilities later on.
