For New MapleStory Players

Notes: If your country does not have a MapleStory version, you will get a chance to choose the version you prefer!

Getting Started

First, you'll need a MapleStory account and a copy of the game client.
The game client can be found here.(for MapleSEA) The official website that can be found [www.maplestory.com here] (Main MapleStory Website)

Once you're registered, and finish installing the game, run MapleStory.exe. Enter your user name and password. Make sure the 'Remember Me' box is checked or unchecked whether or not you are using a public computer. You will need to assign a Pin for the first time you log onto your account. Do not use easily guessable PINs like "0000" or "1337".(Do note that the pin is only for MapleGlobal.

Next is the selection of servers screen. Scania is the most crowded, and you'll have problems logging in during peak hours, so we don't recommend it. Bera and Broa are less crowded. Windia is a newer server so its lacking in population. Kradia, like Windia, is also a newer server and doesn't have many people on it. Kradia is less crowded than those servers, and Yellonde is the newest server with the least people on it. (These servers are only for MapleGlobal. MapleSEA has only 5; Aquila, Bootes, Cassiopeia, Delphinus and Eridanus). It's up to you which one you join. If you don't like that server, you can easily make a new character in another server, so don't worry too much.

After that is the select channel screen. The colored bars indicate the number of players on that channel. It doesn't matter which one you pick, as you can change any time, and you don't even need to log out! Channel 1 is usually the most crowded.

Now, you're at the character select screen, finally. Just hit the Create a Character button. Customize your character's appearance as you wish, but choose carefully, as you cannot change the hair, face, eyes, or skin colours without buying items with real currency later in the game. Look at the Class Choosing Guide, and pick the one that appeals the most to you. Pick an in-game name, and click the Check button.

We highly recommend against using any of the following in your name:

  • Race abbreviations
  • Too many numbers
  • Gibberish or meaningless strings like "xXx"
  • Names of popular anime characters

The Stats Roll

Now that you've selected your character's name, and you know what class you want to be, it's time for the most frustrating part of character creation: the stat roll.
These are the ideal stats for each class (note that 'X' means any number)
Warriors:

  • STR: X (Note: Get 35 STR before level 10)
  • DEX: X
  • INT: 4 or 5
  • LUK: 4 or 5

Bowmen:

  • STR: X
  • DEX: X (Note: Get 25 DEX before level 10)
  • INT: 4 or 5
  • LUK: 4 or 5

Thieves:

  • STR: 4 or 5
  • DEX: X (Note: Get 25 DEX before level 10)
  • INT: 4 or 5
  • LUK: X

Magicians:

  • STR: 4 or 5
  • DEX: 4 or 5
  • INT: X (Note: Get 20 INT before level 8)
  • LUK: X

Pirates:

  • STR: X
  • DEX: X (Note: Get 20 DEX before level 10)
  • INT: 4 or 5
  • LUK: 4 or 5

For the '4 or 5' stats, 4 is better, but if you don't want to waste too much time, 5 is alright.

As you level, keep these stat recommendations in mind:

Warriors: DEX should be 2x your level. (Every time you level place 2 AP in DEX) Everything else goes into STR.

Bowmen: If you want to use a bow, then STR should be 5+ your level. (Every time you level place 1 AP in STR.) If you want to use a crossbow, then STR should be equal to your level. Everything else goes into DEX.

Thieves: DEX twice your level. Everything else in LUK.

Magicians: LUK should be (Level + 3). Everything else in INT.

Pirates: Depends on your primary weapon,

Gun-users - STR should be your level. Everything else in DEX Knucklers - DEX should be your level. Everything else in STR (Note: At Level 10 you should have 20 DEX at your job adavancement which means DO NOT TOUCH DEX UNTIL Lvl 21

Things to do

You'll start off on Maple Island. Follow the in-game instructions. The NPCs you meet will give you some tasks. If you already know what you're doing, skip all but the second one -- it gives you 3 Red Potions. When you're done with the tasks, feel free to kill some snails to level up. Beginning Magicians and Thieves should stick to ordinary Snails.

A few maps east (right), you'll find Maria. She'll give you the quest Maria's Letter, which has a pretty good reward. (A random coloured headband which adds to your defense.) To get to Amherst, take the top exit at the right of the screen (as opposed to the bottom exit which leads to Southperry). Go right one more map to get to Amherst and find Lucas. After talking to Lucas, return to Maria. The reward is a piece of level 5 headband. Put it on if you meet the level requirement. You now take less damage!

The next quest is more difficult. You shouldn't attempt it unless you're planning to be a Bowman or Warrior. Talk to Biggs at West Field of Southperry (bottom exit from A Split Road). You need to collect 30 Blue Snail Shells and 10 Orange Mushroom Caps. The snails shouldn't pose a threat to you, but the mushrooms are another story -- they're way fast, take a few hits to kill, and do a lot of damage to you. The reward is a better weapon though, its either a Razor (level 5) or a Fruit Knife (level 8). The Razor is much more common to the Fruit Knide.
If you're a Magician or a Thief and you still want to do this quest, just buy the Mushroom Caps from another player, but you can attempt it, as there is nothing to lose.

Your ultimate goal here is to reach level 10 (or 8 if you're planning to be a Magician). Just keep killing those snails and/or mushrooms, and take a break if you get bored. When you finally reached level 10 (or 8 for Magicians), Shanks on the far right of Southperry will take you to Victoria Island for a cheap 150 mesos. However, if you want to leave before the required level for your job, (Which we highly do not recommend!) you must be at least level 7.

Interesting training spots

Here's some maps that are little known. You can usually train there with little disturbance, even on Channel 1!

Maps which link from The Field West and East of Amherst
They contain a variety of monsters. For most of these maps, the Orange Mushrooms are on the bottom, and the weaker monsters on top.
Snail Field of Flowers
Contains all types of snails, as the name implies. You get there by entering Amherst TownStreet, then taking the portal which is outside the house.
Tomato Field
Maple Island's only hidden map. You get there by going to the right side of the Field East of Amherst. On one of the platforms there is some tomato plants. Press the UP arrow there. There's Snails, Blue Snails and Red Snails in this map.

The First Job Advancement

To make the first advancement, you need to go to Victoria Island. Find the ticket booth in Lith Harbour and talk to the NPC there except for the pirate. For the pirates, go to Henesys and walk 3 portal to your right. Then go to the right of the map. You will see the entrance. Go to the appropriate town, for a small fee.

  • Warriors - Perion
  • Archers - Henesys
  • Thieves - Kerning City
  • Magicians - Ellinia
  • Pirates - Nautilus Port

Find the job advancement NPC. In Perion, the job advancement NPC is at the very top, in Henesys, the job advancement NPC is in Mushroom Park, at the very right, inside the tree, in Kerning City, the job advancement NPC is inside a building with a sign that says 'Jazz Cafe', and in Ellinia, the job advancement NPC is also at the very top(Magic Library). For the pirate, you must enter the middle portal of the ship and keep following the signs. If you followed this guide properly, you shouldn't have to worry about the stat requirements.

Congratulations! You're no longer a beginner!
