Description

A hack in Maple Story is a something done outside of the game without legal consent to influence the game itself, and can be considered cheating, because it involves the use of a 3rd party program. For example: The popular "Item Vacuum Hack" sucks, or vacuums, all or most items on the map that the character can currently pick up (items from monsters not killed by the player still within the ten-second limit are such examples) to the character. This hack enables quick withdrawing of items that would otherwise not be possible in the game.

Although hacks are most often used for cheating in the game, there is the rare occasion where someone uses a hack to crash the game's server out of malicious intent (though such incidents are decidedly rare).

Solutions

Even though hackers are annoying, you cannot stop them. Neither are you going to sit and wait for a Gamemaster to come along and ban the hacker. So one of the reliable methods is to report the hacker to a GM (which can be done ten times a day).

Defaming has been a suggested method. However, the problem with defaming the hacker is that generally, hackers are weak, low levelled new players and therefore possess no fame to take away. Hackers do not care about fame anyway, as fame does nothing to intefere with their hacking.

An advised method, especially if you cannot see the hacker on the main screen but can see him on the minimap, is to take a screenshot. This would warn others that hackers like to hack in that area. By taking a screenshot, it is also proof of hacking, and when posted in forums, can direct Gamemasters to ban the hacker. Do take screenshots fast, because when hackers see you, they will probably log off to prevent you from reporting them.
