Lag is a term used in online games when the connection between the game client and server is running slower than usual, resulting in a delay of data arriving at the client causing everything on screen to freeze momentarily until the client receives a response from the server. If the client lags for long enough, it will assume that the connection was lost and quits.

In MapleStory, when a client is lagging, the player will most likely notice that:

  • They cannot attack, use supportive skills, or talk publicly until a proper connection is restored
  • They can attack and do damage, but their target is not killed.

When lag goes away, the client will calculate the total damage done and will take it into account on the server. If the server notices that a player is lagging, damage to the player will not be calculated until it recieves a response from that player's client. If by chance the connection to that client is lost, the damage is nullified and no damage is dealt to the player.
